Course Outline for The Fearless Resume
Course Description:
This course will inform and educate the students about writing a resume that communicates exactly who they are, thus helping them to find the job they are destined to land! Through a series of written exercises, and video and audio presentations, the students will become prepared to communicate their qualifiable and quantifiable accomplishments and value to a hiring manager. They will produce a resume highlighting their accomplishments and skills, and depict a multidimensional view of who they really are.
Prerequisite skills:
None.
Expected Student Outcomes:
Upon completion of the Fearless Resume course, the student should be able to:
- Write a resume that gets results and interviews.
- Communicate their value to a hiring manager.
- Define their qualifiable and quantifiable accomplishments.
- Highlight and describe their core competencies/transferable skills.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of the Fearless Resume course, the student should be able to:
- List the critical parts of a resume.
- Discuss in their own words how each critical part of the resume applies to them.
- Define their work experience and accomplishments in reverse chronological order under the “professional experience” part of the resume.
- Design the layout and format of their resume to include the critical parts and the content from each part of the resume using a resume template.
- Utilize correct punctuation, spelling, capitalization and grammar in their cover letters.
- Document the facts of their professional history and write a 1 to 3 page resume depending on the length of their job history.
- List their quantifiable and qualifiable accomplishments.
- Describe in their own words, their core competencies and transferable skills.
- Communicate their values and interests and provide that information in the resume under the professional heading of professional associations or community service.
- Learn how to attract people that value their history.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of the Fearless Resume course, the student should be able to:
- Write a resume that secures them interviews and lands them their ideal job.
- Communicate their value and transferable skills to a hiring manager.
Methods of Presentation:
Writing assignments
Audio Presentations
Video Presentations
Typical Assignments:
Written and Lecture with visual examples of the components of resumes, resume writing process i.e. “day in the life document”, sample resumes and a document outlining what hiring managers are looking for.
Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
Homework assignments relating to the course materials.
Final project-
- Write a Resume
- Write a list of 6-8 core competencies and define each one and how they apply in a work situation.
- Provide a list of transferable skills.
